Neuschwanstein is the unfinished 19th century creation of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Built on the site of an old castle, "New Swan Stone" is a spectacular example of what you can do if you possess money and the desire to escape from the world.

The castle was started in 1869, but remained unfinished at the time of the King's shocking death in 1886. The photos show Castle Neuschwanstein, perched on a rocky outcrop, enveloped by clouds. The western end of the castle contains a vividly decorated throne room, with superb views over the surrounding scenery.

The Marienbrücke, which spans a gorge opposite the castle, provides a stunning backdrop when viewed from Neuschwanstein, and equally brilliant views of the castle itself.
